Eugene Emeralds

Sluggo is the mascot for the Eugene Emeralds in the Northwest League. The Emeralds are the Short Season Class-A Affiliate for the Chicago Cubs. Located in Eugene, Oregon, they play their games at the University of Oregon’s PK Park since leaving Civic Stadium in 2010.

Sluggo was introduced in 2010 when he emerged from the thick trees of Spencer Butte. Sluggo loved to sit up on the butte and watch the Emeralds STOMP their competition at Civic Stadium. He would cheer as the Ems hit home runs over the fence, turned double plays and made diving catches in the outfield. Sluggo dreamed of being on the team one day, but there were two issues: 1) None of the other players had green hair all over their body and 2) Sluggo wasn’t all that athletic in the first place.

With a dream and a smile he made his way onto the team one way or another, and found his rightful place as the team’s trusty mascot. Now, Sluggo spends his summer days and nights at PK Park dumping his favorite snack, popcorn, on the fans from the suite level above, kissing the unlucky fans during the Kiss Cam, and racing across the field from his biggest fans in Sluggo’s 7th Inning Stretch Fun Run.

Working with the Emeralds led him to meet his best friend, Sasquatch. The two are the dynamic duo in the rally efforts performed in the middle of the 9th inning when the Emeralds are down and need a pick-me-up to make their comeback. Sluggo also met his brother from another team, Clark the Cub, the mascot for the Chicago Cubs. Those two bears are epic pranksters.

During his off-days, Sluggo attempts to work in the front office, or he visits local community members like the kids in the pediatric wing of our local hospital. He stays loose for the season by running the bases, running the stairs at the main entrance to PK Park, and eating all the popcorn he can before he has to “accidentally” spill it during the season.

After two Northwest League Championships in the last three years, Sluggo’s paws will be kicking off the 2019 season with two Championship Rings, and hoping for a third.
